Johannes König grew up in Regensburg and has been the sub-principal cellist in the Munich Symphony Orchestra since 2023. In addition to this part-time orchestral position, he is an active freelancer in historical performance practice. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. His teachers included Stephan Haack, Helmar Stiehler and Maximilian Hornung. He received further instruction and inspiration from baroque cellist Kristin von der Goltz. Johannes König also attended the internationally renowned Zermatt Festival Academy ‒ sponsored by the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic ‒ and master classes with Natalia Gutman and others. Already during his studies he was engaged by the Munich Philharmonic in a fixed-term contract. Additionally, he played concerts with the European Union Youth Orchestra for several years. As a student, Johannes König was a scholarship holder of Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. He plays a cello by Dietmar Rexhausen and a baroque cello by Tilman Muthesius.
